Founded in 1947, Chonbuk National University (CBNU) is a comprehensive, research university in South Korea. The university is located in Jeonju, which means the ‘perfect area,’ the capital of North Jeolla Province. The city features historical values and urban features at the same time. The Korean Government established one national university per province in South Korea. These national universities are known as flagship national universities, which aim to provide higher education throughout the country. CBNU started with five colleges with 16 departments. Now the university has grown larger to provide more study options for residents in the region. Today, CBNU has seven campuses and it houses 15 colleges with 100+ departments and 120+ graduate and post-graduate courses. Provided degree courses include nursing, agriculture and life science, law, education, social sciences and humanities, veterinary, fine arts, medicine, dentistry, engineering and more. The university has expanded not only in size, but also in its research capabilities. It houses some of the world’s best research centers including High Enthalpy Plasma Research Center, Korean Zoonosis Research Institute, and Los Alamos National Laboratory and more. These research facilities allow researchers and students to conduct any kind of research they want. The university’s researcher-friendly atmosphere leads to achieving globally recognized research outcomes. Some projects have been introduced on ACS Nano, AFM and Small. Excellent research outcomes have garnered international attention and the university’s global presence is growing. CBNU is now the go-to university for international researchers and students. It has the largest student mobility among national universities in South Korea. Adding to that, CBNU has partnerships with more than 400 universities from 72 countries. CBNU will continue to grow through constant innovation. In recent years, it has built a new library and museum. Celebrating its 70th anniversary in 2017, the university is renovating its campus into traditional Korean style, which will ultimately become the landmark in the region.
